For many September signals the end of Summer, September is typically a quieter time to visit as the weather gradually changes, however the Lake District landscape during the Autumn transition is a thing of beauty as the Autumn colours transform the landscape.
Saturday 1 September - Chillswim – Coniston
Chillswim Coniston has been sold out every year since its inception. It's a unique swim with a highly experienced management team. We have 750 swimmers complete the full length of Lake Swim in six separate starts based on your average mile pace to give you the best experience possible.
Thursday 6 September to Sunday 9 September - Heritage Open Days
Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,000 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers. Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.
Friday 7 September to Sunday 9 September: Lakes Alive
Lakes Alive is a family-friendly festival of spectacular happenings which takes you to public spaces and hidden places across Kendal. A spectacular arts and culture festival held across Kendal town centre. The festival offers a weekend of free events for residents and visitors to enjoy. Lakes Alive is set to return over the weekend of 6th – 8th September 2019 with a weekend of amazing installations, vibrant illuminations, intimate performances and digital delights. The full line-up will be released later in the year.
Friday 7 September to Sunday 9 September: Grasmere Guzzler
A weekend of sampling fine ales and live music at Tweedies Grasmere. The event is free and feature a BBQ and food stalls as well as beer!
Saturday 8 September to Sunday 9 September: Holker Chilli Fest - Cark-in-Cartmel
A two day Festival with specialist chilli companies from all over the country, local specialist food suppliers, catering featuring cuisine from around the world and a variety of quirky gifts. With entertainment, cookery demonstrations and the much-anticipated chilli eating competition with Darth Naga, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Open 10.30am – 5.00pm. £6.50 per adult, children free. Dogs on leads welcome.
Thursday 13 September - Westmorland County Show
A major livestock Show with classes for cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and alpacas, heavy and light horses too, there’s plenty to see. Come and meet the foxhounds, get up close to magnificent cattle, marvel at the show jumping, discover the interactive displays in our Learning for Life Marquee, get inspired by the WI’s crafty creations, or cheer on your favourites in the Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling. Be tempted by artisan chocolates, cheeses, pies, gins and much more in the North West’s largest local Food Hall, or drop the children off at our crèche and enjoy the Show at your own pace.
Winner of the Tourism Event of the Year in the Cumbria Tourism Awards 2018, Westmorland County Show is not to be missed.
Friday 14 September to Saturday 15 September: Kendal Torchlight Carnival
Kendal Torchlight Carnival has, since 1970, lit up and entertained children and adults alike with a variety of Carnival Floats, Dancers, Bands and other precisionists’. Our function is to promote the best of Kendal to the rest of the world; to promote local business and enterprise, to show Kendal’s skills talents and capabilities, and to enliven and stimulate Kendalian community spirit.
