Brathay Loft is a luxury fully self contained apartment, sleeping two, which forms a part of a beautiful 17th Century Lakeland property called Hacket Forge. It is nestled in an idyllic setting by the banks of the River Brathay, set amongst an acre of gorgeous gardens and tranquil woodland and lies just a few minutes easy walk outside the pretty village of Little Langdale.

The property is thought to be the oldest in the valley and is steeped in history and overflowing with charm (the Wordsworths were familiar with it, as was Beatrix Potter who bought land on the other side of the river, village dances used to be held in the cottage, and as an early Bloomery Forge it helped drive the local economy through the 1600-1700s). It has been fully renovated and is superbly presented; its ancient oak beams have been blended with Farrow & Ball decor, a beautiful antique bedstead, quality modern appliances and a cosy wood burner.

Accommodation in Detail
Brathay Loft is accessed from the outside up original stone steps to its own front door (which are uneven and may be an issue for people with mobility restrictions).  Inside it comprises a very spacious open-plan lounge/fully equipped kitchen diner with impressive oak beamed ceiling, wood burner, HD TV and DVD player and a cosy sofa. The kitchen has all quality appliances with integrated dishwasher, washer/dryer and fridge and there is a large window overlooking the garden and river with views out towards the Wetherlam and Swirl How fells. A door from the main room opens to a few small steps that lead to a cosy double bedroom which has a beautiful antique iron and brass bedstead, quality mattress and another large window which overlooks the river. There is a separate wet room with shower, sink and WC. Although Wifi is available please be aware that on occasions the connection may be intermittent.

N.B. There is one step separating the open plan living/kitchen area. One step down into the bathroom and 4 steps up to the bedroom.

The Gardens
Outside, the gardens and woodland will captivate you. Guests of the Loft have the exclusive use of a pretty private garden that is set overlooking the property, accessed from the side of the shed, and is equipped with an iron and slate bistro table and chairs and a wooden bench to sit back on and drink in the peace and beauty of the place. The upstream end of the garden is also available for guests to stroll in where you will find lovely picnic spots in the meadow by the river, numerous other seating areas from which to watch the dippers and occasional Kingfisher hunting fish by the series of gentle cascades, and a rope swing for the young at heart. From the upstream end of the garden, guests can access a public footpath which leads out on to the fells or down to the waterfalls at Colwith Force. And for views, the fells of Wetherlam and Swirl How peep through the woods to provide a final touch of magnificence.

The property is set well back from the road and is accessed down its own dry stone walled driveway to a small courtyard between the cottage and a store shed that is able to accommodate two bikes for Loft guests. Beyond this there is parking for one car (again, shared with Hacket Forge cottage. Please take care not to block the turning area).

Whether you are looking for long hikes on the fells, or shorter, lower level walks in the valley, Brathay Loft is the ideal starting point for exploring this beautiful area. The property is within easy walking distance of Colwith Force, Tilberthwaite Ghyll, Wetherlam and surrounding fells, Slaters Bridge, Tarn Hows and the Langdale Pikes. Indeed, there is such an abundance of beguiling scenery, tarns, mountains and becks to explore straight from your door that once you have arrived you shouldn't need to use your car at all! For those who fancy a stroll around the shops and cafes of Lakeland towns and villages, Ambleside, Coniston, Hawkeshead and Grasmere are within five miles. Boat rides on the Lakes, water sports, fishing and riding are within easy reach, and the nearest pub - the lovely Three Shires Inn, serving bar and restaurant meals - is a few minutes' walk from the Loft. Hacket Forge and Brathay Loft are joined together but are accessed via their own separate entrances.

Please bear in mind that the bedroom of Brathay Loft is close to the small private rear deck area, over the river, which is let with Hacket Forge, so when guests are seated there, noise transference may occur. There is a blind to maintain privacy if required. Broadband can be intermittent at times.
