We recently asked our owners, Mr & Mrs. Lancaster, a few questions about their Lake District holiday cottage; Bluebells Cottage, and about holiday letting in the Lake District. Here’s what they told us:

What inspired you to start holiday letting in the Lake District?

We have owned a boat on Windermere since our children were toddlers, spending many a happy hour making precious memories of having fun on the Lake. Five years ago we decided we wanted a property in Windermere so we could enjoy the Lakes all year round.

We bought Bluebells Cottage and invite guests to share our home and enjoy the Lakes as much as we do.

What have you found challenging about holiday letting?

It was difficult at first allowing guests to share our home, but on the whole people respect our property and get as much enjoyment from staying there as we do.

What do you enjoy about holiday letting?

Holiday letting has enabled us to own a Lakeland Holiday Cottage in Windermere!

What advice would you give to someone who is considering letting their property as a holiday cottage in the Lake District?

Make sure you are with an efficient management company and have a good housekeeper.

What drew you to Bluebells Cottage?

We fell in love with Bluebells Cottage straight away as the Victorian, Lakeland stone cottage was full of character, spacious, comfortable and in a great location with unrestricted parking. Our daughter thought of the name “Bluebells!”

Can you tell us about the history or a story about your property, Bluebells Cottage?

Bluebells Cottage was built in 1902 and has provided a home for many families. A guest gave us a lovely story that she had lived there as a student in the 1990s and had met her husband who had gatecrashed the party, in the kitchen! Another guest let us know that they had completed their first novel whilst staying at Bluebells.

What’s your favourite room in your property, Bluebells Cottage? And why do you love it so much?

We love the master suite on the top floor as it is a little escape for some “ME” time when holidaying with a house full! We love looking at the hills first thing in the morning through the Velux window.

What are the best three features about the accommodation at Bluebells Cottage, that your guests can enjoy?

Is there a detail or hidden gem at your holiday cottage that guests may miss if they didn’t know it was there?

You can catch the evening sun in the garden, reflecting on your day, enjoying a glass of wine and listening to the birds.

Can you recommend a restaurant, pub or cafe local to Bluebells Cottage, where guests could enjoy a nice meal?

There is lots of choice within walking distance; Homeground, Café Italia, Tapios, and San Pietro in Windermere. The Angel, the Flying Pig and the Westmorland in Bowness.

Where would you recommend guests who stay at Bluebells Cottage visit during their Lake District holiday?

Definitely must experience the Lake either by way of a Lake Cruise or being more adventurous and getting involved in some water sporting activities. It is lovely to walk up to nearby Orrest Head for a great view of Windermere and surrounding fells.

And finally, is there anything you’d like to say to holidaymakers who are considering a holiday in the Lake District?

The Lake District is absolutely beautiful and we never ever get bored of it!
Bluebells Cottage is a beautiful self-catering holiday cottage in Windermere, sleeping 6 with spacious living areas and a lovely garden for you to relax in during your stay.
