With half term on the horizon what better way to spend your break creating memories with your loved ones. Time is precious, so we’ve come up with the best free activities to enjoy with your family this February half term in the Lake District. It's a great time of year to wrap up warm, get your wellies on and get out with your family.
The craze sweeping the lakes which involves decoratively painting pebbles in order to hide for others to find. Pebbles can be found all over, in Windermere, Ambleside, Kendal and even Elterwater! You can either keep the pebble or re-hide for someone else to find. Keep your eyes peeled whilst out and about.
Me and my little boy often play poo-sticks which involves dropping a stick in the stream from a bridge and the first stick to be seen from the other side of the bridge is the winner. Slaters Bridge in Little Langdale is a perfect location for this. [image imagestyle="basic_page_horizontal" align="left"]1108[/image]
The Lake District has an abundance of wildlife. You can research the local birdlife and ask your child to note down which birds they’ve seen. Whilst out and about in Langdale I’ve spotted a Pheasant, Buzzard and Kestrel. Feeding the ducks & swans on Lake Windermere is also enjoyable for little ones however, best to get duck food though as bread is not good them.
This activity is often a daily occurrence for me and usually happens before we’ve had the chance to put our wellies on! The Lake District is famous for it's wet weather but there’s no reason to let it stop the fun, puddles available at various times through the year.
Now I am completely useless at this but always give it a go. Skimming stones can be done at any Lake or Tarn and involves throwing stones (preferably flat ones) across the top of the water and seeing how many times it bounces off the water! In 2018 Windermere was host to the world stone skimming championships at Fell Foot Park in which a newcomer Alex Lewis threw a massive 95 meters beating the previous record of 7 meters!
We hope you've enjoyed our free family fun ideas, and if you enjoy one of our suggestions take a picture and send it to us, we'd love to see you!
