Fells and lake in the Lake District

2016 marks 150 years since the birth of Beatrix Potter.

One of our most loved authors, illustrators and latterly a sheep farmer Beatrix Potter is synonymous with The Lake District.

Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top, her Lakeland home, in the hamlet of Near Sawrey in 1905 where some of her best work was written.

In 1913 she turned away from writing to take up farming and in her lifetime bought 15 farms in which she took great interest.

It was with great foresight that she also bought many acres of land which was for the sole purpose of leaving to The National Trust.

The Armitt Museum in Ambleside of which she was a benefactor houses many of her works including her own personal first edition copies which were bequeathed to the museum on her death.

There are many places to visit to get a feel of this unique woman namely Hill Top, Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead and The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness on Windermere all well worth a visit.
