High Wallowbarrow Farm is traditional hill farm owned by the National Trust. Situated in the lovely, unspoilt Duddon Valley in the west of the Lake District, the farm is found on a quiet side road part way down the valley so you will feel ‘away from it all’ and in the heart of the countryside. The farm has a self-catering cottage next door to the friendly farmer’s house with lovely views from the stable door in the lounge to the imposing Wallabarrow Crag. The cosy Cottage has recently benefitted from a newly fitted kitchen and carpet in the lounge.
This is a working farm and you will be able to see a menagerie of animals and farm machinery close up; always fascinating for children. There may even be some free range eggs and other farm produce available. There is also a three wheeler jogger and Macpack carrier which visitors can borrow for small sizes to help you get out and about.
There is a wide range of walks to choose from directly from the Cottage; no need to use the car once you have arrived. You can take your pick of walks through the woodland, up the Dunnerdale Fells to Stickle Pike or along the sparkling river at the bottom of the valley.
The Duddon Valley is said to have been a favourite of the famous writer Wainwright, however he wrote very little about it preferring to keep it a secret, only visited by those in the know. There are also classes held thoughout the year in the nearby barn on topics as diverse as Willow fencing, yoga and wild food.
The Cottage is within easy striking distance of the 16th Century Newfield Inn (look out for the distinctive stripy slate floor which is from the area) and the award winning Blacksmiths Arms at Broughton Mills which serves home-cooked food. The pretty Georgian market town of Broughton is also only 5 miles away and has a number of pubs, a family greengrocer/butcher and café where the produce is home-baked.
High Wallowbarrow Farm Cottage is a lovely home-from-home base to explore the Lake District.
