Lake District Country Shows

As the summer draws near we’d like to look ahead to the variety of open air shows, galas and sports gatherings around the South and central Lake District. These events bring together holidaymakers and the local populace to enjoy some of the best food, activities and fun to be found in the Lake District.

From small rural galas to some well-established & nationally known events, there is something for everyone all within an easy drive from our cottages here in Langdale and the surrounding areas. We’re not going to list everything (we’d be here all day!) but here are a few of our favourites.

Langdale Gala 5/7/15 - This one’s an obvious choice for us, based only ½ a mile away from our office in Elterwater. Held on the first Sunday of July in the field opposite Wainwrights Inn, Chapel Stile. Langdale Gala is family friendly and a great day for younger children (the site itself being small enough to make it difficult to ‘lose’ the rest of the family). Plenty of activities for the kids including face-painting, bouncy castles, games and races.

For the adults there are dry-stone walling demonstrations, sheep shearing, sheep racing (honestly), Cumberland Wrestling (both spectating and open to all comers). Kids quite enjoy persuading their parents into the ‘parents races’ whilst the fittest amongst you may be tempted by the fell races.

Ambleside Sports 30/7/15 – One of the oldest sporting gatherings in the Lake District, Ambleside Sports is a fantastic spectator event. Cumberland wrestling, Fell-running, Hound trails, Track racing and Cycle races all feature at the show.  Looking beyond the sports on offer, this event also features the ‘Made in Cumbria’ craft marquee, a host of local trade stalls, a fully stocked beer tent (have we mentioned the high quality of Cumbrian brewers before?) plus lots of displays such as juggling and Ju-Jitsu.

Grasmere Sports 30/8/15 – Surrounded by the fells of the central Lake District the 2015 Annual Grasmere Lakeland Sports, now celebrating 165 years of existence, has been a regular annual event since 1868, unbroken except for the two periods of the First and Second World Wars.

Now one of the most popular traditional events in the English Lake District, participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling, Fell Running and Hound Trails. On the day there will be displays from the Adamson marching band and Ridgeside Falconry providing both static displays of their birds and spectacular flying displays throughout the day. Grasmere Sports really gives a feel of the relationship between the event itself and the life of the area surrounding it.

Westmorland County Show 10/9/15 – ‘The Daddy’ of all the shows in our area, Westmorland Show is a ‘start early-finish late’ event with so much to see. Last year’s event attracted over 29000 people. At its heart this show is about livestock and agriculture, with competitions for best cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, heavy horses, alpacas, dogs and poultry.  There is a huge area for trade stands that can sell you anything from a tractor to a new hat to a hot tub.

Westmorland is proud to boast the largest local products Food Hall in the North West, and probably in the Country, entirely supported by local producers promoting their own products, with special demonstrators and Celebrity Chefs. The Society are committed to supporting and promoting Cumbria's wide range of wonderful artisan craft businesses.

All of our cottages are within 45 minutes’ drive of the Westmorland Show field, for availability please check Our Cottages page.
