The 2013 Langdale Gala will be held on Sunday 7th July at Walthwaite Meadow in Chapel Stile. Two years ago our local event was almost consigned to the history books before a new committee formed and rallied the local community to produce a fantastic event for all the family in 2012.
This years event is looking to build on the success of last year with even more to attract both locals and visitors to the show. Many of Cumbria’s showpiece events take place at the gala with Wrestling and Fell Racing being the main sporting attractions. The Gala’s main race has been extended this year to cover 4.5km ascending 410m to the summit of Silver Howe & slightly beyond. There will also be fell races for the under 18′s along with loads of events for younger children to get involved in. The final event of the day will be the ‘Tug O' War’ which is open to all-comers and is usually hotly contested (but in good spirits) amongst our local farming community, fuelled by some of the fantastic ales on offer both at the gala and at the nearby Wainwrights Inn.
Other than the sports there is always plenty to do with examples of Sheep Shearing, Dry stone walling/stonework and local crafts demonstrated throughout the day. Plenty of trade-stands and an abundance of food will be on offer, whilst the Tombola and Gala raffle offer the chance of a few (really great) prizes for the lucky ones. For the kids there is a fancy dress competition, a circus skills area and bouncy castle (what is it about bouncy castles that make adults wish they were 5 again).
The Gala will be opened by the Gala Queen at 12 O’Clock, why not come and join in with the community spirit.
