Getting out in the rain is better than staying in
Waking up to a grey, windy & very wet day isn’t really all that inspiring. The prospect of a whole day spent indoors with a 4 & 7 year old is probably even less inspiring, by mid afternoon their energy level will probably outstrip my own. So decision made we all don our waterproofs, pack a drink & head of into the wild (well the path to Skelwith Bridge anyway).
We discovered it’s actually easier to walk in the rain as both kids spent the entire walk looking for the next muddy puddle to jump in. Barring one fall (a rather spectacular ‘flat on the face’ epic) we managed to get to ‘Chesters Coffee Shop‘ without any moaning about tired legs or wanting to be carried.
Lunch involved hot soup, sausage rolls & cake washed down with tea for us & apple juice for K & M, (you may need medical assistance after being given your bill at Chesters). The walk back involved lots more puddle jumping, conversations about what to do if you fell in the raging torrent that was Langdale Beck & the promise of visiting big sister who was working at The Britannia Inn (may have to stop for a pint too). Arriving home we all felt much better for having got out & done something, now we could relax in front of the fire watching Toy Story 3 without feeling guilty.
